Are You Too Jewish or Not Jewish Enough? (Cambridge, MA)

ree

I was having tea with a new Jewish friend.

She told me her father was Jewish and that he had converted before she was born.

She described growing up in a conservative Jewish world but feeling out of place with her peers, like she was never "Jewish enough" for the community's approval because her father wasn't born Jewish.

Later that same week, I had dinner with another new friend.

This woman described growing up in a small Massachusetts town and being the only jew in her school.

Her father had also converted to Judaism before she was born.

This person described feeling "too Jewish" in this little town.

The first felt, "not Jewish enough."

The second, "too Jewish."

It seems to me that many folks I've connected with have felt one of the ways described above.

I know I have.

If you can relate, I invite you to join me at my upcoming workshop in August, "Understanding Trauma for Anxious Jews" where together we will explore the ins and outs of Jewish identity. Discover why in the world, from a biological perspective, we feel the need to either go all out with flaming Jewish pride, flags waving, or shove our Jewish selves back into an internal ark to hide.

Connect with other folks who have felt the internal polarity of their Jewish identity.

You're not alone.
